Duarte Ryu
Martial Art of the Dominican Republic
Jonathan Haupt Sensei, is the founder and chief instructor of Duarte Ryu. Sensei has over 18 years in the martial arts and has studied various styles of fighting. Sensei is currently training with, and being mentored by,  Vietnamese Master Tran of Shaolin Kung-Fu, and Tae-Kwon-Do. Sensei also receives advice and mentorship from senior sensei who are located on the West Coast of the United States. Jonathan Haupt Sensei, has founded Duarte Ryu based on the knowledge he possesses, while incorporating his own interpretation and transitions of techniques. Duarte Ryu incorporates techniques from other styles that best suit its transitions from and into fighting positions, as well as techniques that mimic certain movements in Dominican culture. Reinforced machete chops, movements from merenque, and techniques involving movements from the Dominican güira, are taught in accordance with the theory of how to move into the transition of the technique. Sensei is honest in saying that the art is still growing, and further developing it's identity. Being founded in 2006 the art is relatively new, and Sensei would like to invite you to come and train, and grow with him in his martial arts journey. Sensei is not claiming to be a Soke or Grandmaster of any type. He is simply a loyal dedicated student of the martial arts. Sensei considers himself a learner who is trying to help other learners along the way.
Jose Rodriguez Sensei, holds a 1st dan ranking in Duarte Ryu. We at Duarte Ryu would like to congratulate Jose on his promotion, and thank him for all of his hard work and service to the art. Jose is one of the ranking instructors in the school, and assumes head responsibilities when Jonathan Haupt Sensei is out performing seminars, traveling overseas, and promoting the art in the home country of the Dominican Republic. Jose Rodriguez Sensei is a quality martial artist and trainer who exhibits great knowledge and fighting skill. His loyalty and fighting spirit are a great asset to the Duarte Ryu organization.
