The Dominican Republic, often referred to as the jewel of the Caribbean, is located on the island of Hispaniola, of which it occupies the eastern two thirds of the island. The Dominican Republic is situated between its' two Caribbean neighbors, Cuba and Puerto Rico. Its proximity to the United States, and year round warm weather, make it a great tourist destination for worldwide travellers. Many famous singers and actors have residences in the Dominican Republic, such as designer Oscar de la Renta, singer Julio Iglesias , and many more.
The Dominican Republic has many things to offer, a vibrant culture, rich history, and a diverse population, which all combine to make it an exciting and fascinating country. Upon traveling to the Dominican Republic one will find a fascinating culture as they take in the sights and sounds of the cities and the countryside. The rhythmic musical sounds of merengue and bachata ring all throughout the island, and form part of the country's national identity. Beaches in the Dominican Republic, are known for their white sands and crystal blue water. Many people find solace in them as it provides a way to escape from the world and enjoy the times of days past. The country also is home to many historical and archeological finds ranging from the exploration of the Spanish to the indigenous Taino Indians of the island. The Dominican Republic is truly a sensational place and a true treasure of the Caribbean.
The population of the Dominican Republic is a little over 9,000,000. The largest city is the capital, Santo Domingo, and the second largest is Santiago de los Caballeros. The capital was established in 1496, and is the oldest European settlement in the Western Hemisphere. Juan Pablo Duarte is considered to be the founding father of the Dominican Republic. He fought for the common rights of people, and believed that all should be equal and free. The current president of the Dominican Republic is Dr. Leonel Fernández. Dr. Fernández was president from 1996 to 2000. He ran again in 2004 and won the presidency for the second time in his political career. Dr. Fernández was born in the Dominican Republic, and was raised in the United States. He is a member of the PLD political party.
Baseball is the national pastime of the Dominican Republic. Many Dominicans spend their lifetimes on one of the many baseball diamonds spread throughout the country. Dominican players comprise a significant number of players in Major League Baseball. Famous Dominican baseball players include, Sammy Sosa, Joaquín Andújar, and baseball hall of famer Juan Marichal.
